Fire risk assessments for schools and academies

For headteachers, school business managers, trusts and local authorities.

Your duty

What the law asks of the Responsible Person.

Every school needs a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The Responsible Person depends on the type of school: the local authority for community schools, the trust for academies, and the governing body for voluntary aided and foundation schools.

Schools change constantly. New rooms, new equipment, building works over the holidays and lettings in the evening all affect the fire risk, so the assessment needs to keep up with the building as it is used now.

Who is the Responsible Person in a school?

It depends on the type of school. It is the local authority for community schools, the trust for academies, and the governing body for voluntary aided and foundation schools. The headteacher usually manages fire safety day to day.

Can you support us beyond the fire risk assessment?

Yes. We act as the competent person for health and safety for schools, covering visits, policies, risk assessments and the portal, alongside the fire risk assessment.
